Rhizomes
There is much to learn about rhizome activity in tall fescues. One of
the reasons why is that only a few commercially available varieties have
rhizomes. Since there introduction and obvious benefits - especially
related to improved ground cover and self-repairing ability - both private
and public researchers are taking a deeper interest.

First, here's a couple pictures of a "typical" tall fescue plant after 3-4
years. This variety happens to be Rendition, which is very nice, but
doesn't have rhizomes. The plants are part of the breeder's nursery.

It is easy to see how this would apply to a home
or commercial lawn. These plants NATURALLY want to reproduce
and spread.(click

Finally, here's some photos of a REAL LIVE lawn situation. The soil is
very poor, and there has been damage to the turf, leaving open, bare spots.
